Academic Refresh and Preservation
The renovation of Swartz Hall at Harvard Divinity School (HDS) emphasizes accessibility, sustainability, and inclusivity. It has created a welcoming multifaith environment for students from over 46 faith traditions, featuring adaptable seating, prayer rugs, and meditation cushions. Additionally, a second ablution room is available to support Muslim prayer practices.
The design emphasized sustainability by integrating energy-efficient elements such as internal insulation, a continuous air barrier, and high-performance windows, all of which contributed to achieving LEED Platinum certification. An underground mechanical plant further enhances energy efficiency through heat recovery systems.
The renovation also preserved Harvard's unique collegiate-Gothic architecture. Exterior and select interior wood doors were meticulously restored, showcasing historic craftsmanship. A new addition seamlessly connects the original structure to Harvard Divinity School Commons, which includes a café and gathering spaces, reinforcing Swartz Hall as the vibrant center of the school's spiritual, academic, and social life.
